June 26, 2013

President Obama said Wednesday he will renominate two top military aides: Gen. Martin Dempsey as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Adm. Sandy Winnefeld as vice chair.”

These two distinguished military leaders have earned my trust and that of the American people,” Obama said in a statement.

Both nominations had been expected; Dempsey and Winnefeld have been in their posts for two years.

“These two superb officers have led our military and their families with great distinction, deep conviction, and absolute integrity over the past two years and I am confident in saying that our nation is safer and more secure today because of their visionary, dedicated, and tireless leadership,” Obama said.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said he enthusiastically endorses the renominations.

Obama issued a written statement while aboard Air Force One, en route to Africa on a diplomatic trip.
